STEWART MAYER
camBLOCK Inventor/ Motion, Control Cinematographer
As a documentary filmmaker, Stewart was frustrated with the lack of motion control options suited for location work so he began development on his own system in 2001. Through the development process Stewart observed the varied needs each project demanded, and with this in mind set out to design a new modular system with flexible functionality while maintaining a small portable form factor. In 2008 the new system became camBLOCK, a tool created to meet the needs of ambitious cinematographers who desired to achieve visual effects previously unseen in smaller budget productions. Stewart's interests have led him to acquire a unique set of skills for this line of work. As a geeky kid he built theatrical sets and was apprentice to a US Navy master machinist who saw Stewart's engineering potential. He began college studying electrical and mechanical engineering and taught himself computer programming, but switched his focus to film production which he found was a natural fit for his technical and creative energy. After graduation, Stewart immediately joined the film and television community as a cameraman for commercials, television shows, independent films, and natural history programming. The development of camBLOCK has opened many doors and has allowed Stewart to shoot for various clients all over the world, this shooting experience is used to continually develop the camBLOCK system to meet the demanding needs of today's cinematographers.
